About the event
A regular contributor to South Londonās Steam Down collective as well as the integral, powerhouse bass behind the Mercury-nominated Sons of Kemet, Cross has made further waves with his own solo material. His debut album Fyah, released earlier this year via Gearbox Records, reached #1 in the UK Jazz charts. With Nubya Garcia on tenor saxophone and Moses Boyd on drums, it duly broke convention in its mixing of jazz, Caribbean dub, and dance music. Described by Gilles Peterson as āincredibleā and by the New York Times as āa prodigious young talentā, Cross will be bringing the Fyah across the UK in his first national tour.
Cross has performed with everyone from Kano and Pharoahe Monch to Emelie Sande. His debut EP āAspirationsā was one of the most impactful of 2015, leading to nominations for Best Instrumentalist of the Year (Jazz FM Awards) and Best Jazz Newcomer (Parliamentary Jazz Awards.)
āA key figure in Londonās vital jazz scene, Cross brings new energy to the tuba, an instrument long neglected in jazz and its offshoots.ā ā Pitchfork
āTheon Cross crucially embraces the bass and rhythm role with exuberant inventivenessā ā The Guardian
āTheon Cross plays the tuba as if itās a Roland 303, generating deep, Flubber-like bass lines as well as wild squalls, percussive pops and dubstep bwapsā ā The Quietus
